SableFox's Home Page is ClosedTuesday, 30 April 2002

Always sad to see a Hârn fansite go down. The latest to pull the pin is SableFox's Home Page, which has been around forever. It was a good quality page, with a lot of useful information (especially everything to do with the Inns of Hârn, which fortunately is still up as a separate site). Perhaps this page will revive in the future, time permitting...

Thanks for the news, Patrick.

The following announcement from Columbia Games, made just a short while ago, should raise a few eyebrows among Hârn gaming veterans:

HÂRNQUEST: Columbia Games has decided to create a new version of Encyclopedia Hârnica. We anticipate releasing a variety of articles which will be available for individual purchase both in print and electronically. HârnQuest will be a bundle of new articles that will be sent to Autoshippers every 2-3 months. Autoshippers will receive these articles at 25% off and will also be entitled to purchase electronic articles at 25%.

Contents of the first HârnQuest bundle to be autoshipped in May will be announced within a few days.

Join autoship to ensure that you get the all the new Hârn articles.

HârnQuest, eh? Say, I thought that term was already being used by those gamers who were using RuneQuest rules in their HârnWorld campaigns. Oh well...

The rapid (for CGI, anyway!) frequency of publication - every 2-3 months - is a refreshing change from CGI's previous rate. So is the availability of electronic versions, although that was to be expected since Auran's Electronic License rights lapsed earlier this year. If HârnQuest can deliver new articles on a regular basis, then this periodical promises to be a winner. Watch for it.

An addition to HÂRN LINK is the following virtual chatroom, which is dedicated to fans of Hârn (thanks, Patrick, for letting me know):

Hârn Chat

I just paid a visit to it but found it empty. There is a set time when people are encouraged to login and participate, but it isn't made clear on the site... Patrick has advised me that the usual Chat time is 9:00pm GMT every Sunday. That pretty much excludes all of us Aussies!

As far as I'm aware, this is the only live chat site for Hârn fans. So, check it out!

Okay, I've received a number of emails from people asking me to post a version of the HMG Armour Profiles using the 'corrected' Ring and Scale armour stats. (See my post on 1 April 2002, below.) Well, all right, but only because you're all such nice people! :-)

Note that this 'correction' is entirely unofficial, but I firmly believe that there was an unintentional error in the original HMG.

Fellow HârnGamer Anders Bersten came up with a brilliant suggestion regarding the profiles: why not post HMC/HMG armour profiles for different types of generic NPCs (e.g. Agrikan Fighting Orders) on a regular basis? After all, I have already started the ball rolling by creating a profile summary for knights' armour.

I have one amendment to Anders' suggestion. Rather than it being me compiling generic armour profiles, let's have a bit of audience participation, shall we? Using the HMC Armour Profiles Summary, HMG Armour Profiles Summary or the new 'corrected' HMG summary above, I put the challenge before you to create a set of believable armour profiles for any type of Hârnic warrior! Bandits, gladiators, mercenaries, barbarians, whatever you like! :-)

Please submit your profiles to me as soon as you can. Although the summaries allow for 16 profiles, you don't have to create all 16. As I receive the profiles, I shall put the best ones into a separate armour profiles summary, to eventually be made available for you to download from this site.

Happy designing! :-)

I'm absolutely over the moon that WarFlail's Armoury has received the Gold Wyrm RPG Website Award from RPG Gateway! Here's part of the message I received today:

You have a very nice web site, excellent design, beautiful graphics, and your content is informative, entertaining, presented well and easy to access. A worthy enterprise and a positive contribution to the Web. Your site has been rated a Must-See site by Effie Rover's panel of judges.

We are therefore pleased to present you with Effie Rover's GOLD WYRM RPG Web Site Award!

There are some awards out there that can easily be won by almost any site whether it is truly earned or not. A Gold Wyrm from Effie Rover is not one of them. Your site merits the following:

Your site is developed with an RPG audience in mind and primarily features this content. Content is original, useful, grammatically correct and visually appealing. Your graphics support your content and are not overpowering or distracting. Ease of navigation and quick graphics load time are excellent.

Effie Rover

This is largely thanks to the support those of you who have kindly taken the time to rate this site, and those of you who have gone to the trouble to send me feedback. Thank you! This is awesome! :-) And please keep it going.

The latest addition to HÂRN LINK is the following site:

Samuel Penn's Hârn World

The author appears to have developed a complete rules system (called Yags) for use in Hârn. He certainly seems to have gone to a lot of trouble to do it, so do check it out.

Thanks, Patrick, for the heads up.

House Rules update: Two new files are now ready for download! If you use HârnMaster Gold rules, you may find these very helpful:

They are simply conversions from the HMC profiles summaries I did last month. A side-by-side comparison between the armour stats of both systems will reveal that HMC armour is, on average, over 25% heavier than HMG armour, and nearly 50% more expensive! A high price to pay for armour that is only 12% more protective...

There is one caveat about these armour profiles. In staying true to the letter of the word regarding Ring and Scale armour, I have used the values as they are listed in HMG (Ring: B2 E5 P1 F3 S1 T4; Scale: B3 E5 P4 F4 S1 T5). However, I believe there is an error here: I believe that the APVs for Ring and Scale as they are listed in HMG do not include the Leather backing, although the weight and price look as if they are factoring it in. What this ends up meaning is that these two types of armour are the least efficient armour types in HMG. The solution is to either increase the APVs to include the Leather backing (i.e. Ring: B3 E7 P2 F6 S1 T6; Scale: B4 E7 P5 F7 S1 T7), or reduce the prices and weights to keep the Leather backing separate. If you like, you can make these changes yourself in the workbooks, using View Code to make the hidden tab visible.
