HârnList Rules of Etiquette

This is a listing of the HârnList rules of etiquette for all new subscribers, and a reminder for those more long-term members, as laid down by your friendly neighbourhood List Admin. You might want to keep this web page in mind for future reference. NB: These rules are subject to change without notice.

(1) List Purpose

The purpose of this list is to discuss Hârn and anything that pertains to Hârn, even if the connection is perhaps a bit vague and tenuous. This includes all publications (official and unofficial), books, movies or recordings that might inform, provide ideas, or set the scene, the application of rules -- regardless of system -- in a situation within a Hârn campaign, etc. etc. Off topic discussions are OK if brief and labelled as such in the Subject line, such as "OT: The Off Topic Subject Line".

(2) Behaviour

Flames and trolling will not be tolerated -- usually by anybody on the list, but most especially by me. Do not abuse or insult anyone else, either personally or as a group. If you disagree, express any contrary position politely. Make it a debate instead of a raging argument; it's actually more fun that way. If something makes you mad, don't dash off a reply in the heat of the moment. Go away, calm down, come back and read it again. You just might find they are right...or at least, not the idiots you first thought they were. Post anything you like as like as it has a bearing on Hârn somehow.

(3) Other Rules Systems & Hârn

Do not abuse anyone because of their race, colour, creed, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or role playing rules system used. Members using D&D or d20 rules -- or any other rules system, for that matter -- in HârnWorld are just as welcome here as HârnMaster players. You are all permitted to discuss your rules as they pertain to Harn. Rule 2 applies.

(4) Changing the Subject Line

Please change the Subject line of a message if you reply to it, but are changing the topic from its original. Do this even if the change is minor, so that people can see that the topic has changed without having to open and read the actual message. The ideal is if you say "New Topic (WAS: Old Topic)", or something similar.

(5) Trimming Replies

Ensure that when you reply to a message, you trim (or snip) out the parts of the previous message that have no bearing on your post. This is to reduce the amount of completely redundant or meaningless text that people have to wade through. It might be convenient for you to quickly click reply and dash off a message, but it annoys the rest of us. It also fills up the digest e-mails and archives with completely redundant information.

(6) Plain Text Only

Use only plain text when sending or replying to this mailing list. In my opinion, of all things that cause the most problems and wastes the most bandwidth on the Internet, it is e-mails formatted with HTML. For complete details, check out my short rant on the subject on the following page: Plain Text E-Mails, Please.

(7) Subscription Activities

All subscription activities are carried out on your personal subscription web page. Please point your browser to the HârnList Information page, and type in your password. See Rule 9 for details about getting help if you have any difficulties.

(8) Reading the HârnFAQ

Please read the HârnFAQ before you ask a question, as it may have already be answered. It is common for the same topic to be brought up by someone new to the list, and be answered all over again. Many long-term members have seen this happen very frequently, and get a bit testy (as all old-timers are wont to do). All members (not just new subscribers) should have a read of this valuable document occasionally, just to remind themselves of what is there, and perhaps what should be there. Contributions and corrections to the HârnFAQ are welcome (see Rule 9 below for contact details).

(9) Obtaining List Admin Help for the HârnList or the HârnForum

If you need any assistance, and nothing on this web site can help, you can email help@harnlist.com and I will do what I can. Since I live in Australia, that generally means next day service, since I'll most likely be asleep when you have the problem. But I'll try to help as soon as I can. Also use it to contact me with suggestions for new material for the HârnFAQ, or corrections to errors on these pages, too.
