[ HârnList Etiquette ] [ Plain Text ]
f you are thinking of joining the HârnList, the information provided below will be invaluable. This page will tell how and where you can subscribe to the List, how to adjust your personal settings, and the different subscriber types. There are also some rules of conduct expected of HârnList subscribers, as shown in the HârnList Etiquette page, and why the great majority of other HârnList subscribers prefer plain text e-mail .
The HârnList is an online forum dedicated to the discussion of all things Hârnic, and it is carried out via e-mail. There is a list of subscribers, and when someone sends (or posts) an e-mail message to the list, a copy of it is send to everyone on that list (the subscribers). Other subscribers can reply to the e-mail, and it too will go to the list and from there out to all subscribers. These operations are carried out by a list server, a piece of software running on a computer that also has facilities to allow people to subscribe and unsubscribe, change the way mail is delivered to them, and carry out various other functions. On the list, there are two types of subscribers; regular and digest.
Regular subscribers receive each message individually, soon after it is send to the list by the original author. This means they might receive many small individual e-mails from the discussion list throughout the day, or a lot of individual messages at once if they connect to the Internet via a dial-up modem.
Digest subscribers only get one message from the discussion list per day, but it contains every message that was sent to the list for that day, in the order they were sent in. Some people prefer one message a day than many small e-mails throughout the day, but others find that letting their e-mail client sort the many small, individual e-mails into threads much better.
In order to subscribe to the HârnList, you must go to it's subscriber admin page, which is on the list server. By clicking on the link, you will cause a new browser window to appear, showing that Information Page. A little way down the page is the subscription area. Simply enter the e-mail address you wish the list to send to, select a password and confirm it (it's a good idea NOT to cut-n-paste from the first one to the second; what if you made a typing error and cannot remember what you typed?). Finally, select whether you want to receive every message as it is send out, or just the one (possibly large) digest e-mail per day.
In order to unsubscribe from the HârnList, you will have to go to the subscriber admin page, and then log in to your personal HârnList subscription details page. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the information page, and enter your subscribed e-mail address into the field just above the horizontal line, and click the "Edit Options" button. You will be taken to your personal details page. The very first field is where you enter your password, and by clicking the "Unsubscribe" button, your subscription to the HârnList will be terminated. You will receive one last message from the list server, containing a confirmation that you have unsubscribed and wishing you well for the future.
There is an archive of every post that has been sent to the HârnList since it was move to this list server in early December 2002. Each week's posts are held in a single consolidated thread. The link to this archive is found at the bottom of the first section of the subscriber admin page, and is private. This means you must enter your subscribed e-mail address and password in order to gain entry to the list. The reason the archive is private is to prevent subscribers' e-mail addresses being harvested by spammers.
Prior to the HârnList moving to it's new home, it was housed on a server in my home. The reason it was moved was because of stability and availability issues. However, a number of weekly archives also exist from that period (from April 2002, to early December 2002), and this are now available from the Vault.
The European HârnMaster's Guild (EHG) also maintains a Harnlist Archive, and these stretch back into the dim past, although they appear to stop at 2001. The list is searchable, however.
The subscriber admin page also contains a field where you can log on to your personal (subscriber) details. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to find this field; it is at the very end, just before the horizontal line. Simply enter your e-mail address, click the "Edit Options" button, and you will be taken to a page showing your particular subscription details. Here you can:
Use the Subscriber Options page personalise your subscription options exactly how you want them. Each option is explained fully (or is self-explanatory), but if you have any questions, don't hesitate to send an e-mail to me. Please check this entry on the HarnForum for a contact email address
